Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today laid the foundation stone for India’s first cooperative university, “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University, in Anand, Gujarat. The university, named after the legendary cooperative leader Tribhuvan Das K. Patel, will be built over 125 acres with an estimated cost of ₹500 crore.
The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony witnessed the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Ministers of State for Cooperation Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar and Shri Muralidhar Mohol, and Ministry of Cooperation Secretary Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani.
Highlighting the university’s significance, Shri Shah said this initiative will bridge key gaps in cooperative education and leadership. The university will focus on training cooperative employees and nurturing visionary leaders like Tribhuvan Das Patel, who pioneered the dairy cooperative movement in Kheda in 1946. His efforts laid the foundation for what is now the Amul cooperative network, empowering over 36 lakh women and generating ₹80,000 crore in business.
Shri Shah added that “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University will promote research, transparency, and accountability in the cooperative sector. He emphasized the need for specialized professionals for future initiatives like cooperative insurance and taxi services. The university’s curriculum will transform the cooperative model into a mass movement, making India a global leader in cooperatives.
The CBSE has already introduced cooperatives as a subject in schools, and Shri Shah urged Gujarat to follow suit, ensuring wider awareness and participation in the cooperative movement.
