Dharmendra Deol, one of the most celebrated icons of Indian cinema, leaves behind a legacy that shaped the very language of Bollywood. Born on December 8, 1935, Dharmendra emerged as the “He-Man of Hindi Cinema,” admired for his charisma, versatility and timeless screen presence. His journey began in the early 1960s after he won a talent contest, leading him into films that soon made him a household name across India.
Dharmendra’s filmography spans over six decades, during which he portrayed a remarkable range of roles—from intense action heroes to lovable comedic characters and sensitive romantic leads. His performances in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Dream Girl and Dharam Veer remain etched in Bollywood history. His pairing with Hema Malini became one of the most popular on-screen collaborations of the 1970s and 80s, contributing to some of the era’s biggest blockbusters.
Beyond acting, Dharmendra also played a vital role in establishing the Deol family as one of Bollywood’s most respected film dynasties. His sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol carried forward his cinematic influence, while daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol continued the family's artistic presence.
Dharmendra is survived by a large and close-knit family. He leaves behind his first wife Prakash Kaur and his second wife, actress Hema Malini, From his first marriage, he is survived by sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta and Ajeita. From his second marriage with Hema Malini, he is survived by daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. Dharmendra passed away on Monday (November 24, 2025) due to age-related ailments at 89 in Mumbai. His final rites at the Pawan Hans Crematorium were attended by leading film personalities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling his death “the end of an era in Indian cinema.” His final on-screen appearance will be in Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis, releasing December 25, 2025.
