Asiatic Lion Population Rises to 891 in 2025

On World Lion Day 2026, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav highlighted India’s significant progress in conserving the Asiatic Lion and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

The Asiatic Lion population increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, recording a growth of more than 70% in a decade. The Minister attributed this achievement to the dedicated efforts of forest officials, conservationists, local communities and others involved in protecting the species.

Key Conservation Highlights

·         Total lion population: 891 wild Asiatic lions in the 2025 estimation.

·         Population growth: Increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, a rise of more than 70%.

·         Habitat expansion: Lion habitat increased from around 30,000 sq km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq km.

·         Geographical spread: Asiatic lions are now found across 11 districts of Gujarat.

·         Growing satellite populations: 497 lions were recorded outside the core Gir landscape, including areas such as Barda Wildlife Sanctuary.

India’s conservation efforts demonstrate that development and nature conservation can progress together. The expansion of the lion’s habitat and its growing population reflect sustained conservation measures, community participation and protection of critical habitats.

On World Lion Day, the Minister called for continued efforts to safeguard India’s natural heritage and ensure that the Asiatic Lion remains protected for future generations.
