Odisha Weather: Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Likely in Several Areas
Odisha recorded extremely heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Nabarangpur and Koraput receiving the highest amounts. A depression over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south Odisha is expected to weaken gradually, but heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds may continue in parts of the state.

Odisha experienced extremely heavy rainfall in some areas during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM on September 25, 2026. The highest rainfall was recorded in Nabarangpur and Koraput districts, with several locations receiving more than 20 cm of rain.
Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur recorded the highest rainfall at 39 cm, followed by Nandahandi with 34 cm and Borigumma in Koraput with 31 cm. Similiguda and Kotpad received 27 cm each, while Jeypore recorded 26 cm.
Other significant rainfall totals included 24 cm each at Kosagumda and Jharigam, 23 cm at Chandahandi, and 21 cm each at Kendrapara and Kendrapara PTO. Koraput, Umarkote and Golamunda also recorded 20 cm each.
Depression Moving North-Northwest
The depression over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh moved north-northwestwards and, at 8:30 AM on September 25, was centred over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south interior Odisha, near 20.9°N and 82.4°E.
The system was located close to the north-northwest of Nuapada and about 80 km east-southeast of Raipur. It is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and maintain depression intensity for the next 12 hours before weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area during the following 12 hours.
Rain Forecast for Odisha
The weather system is expected to bring widespread rainfall over Odisha on September 25 and 26. Scattered to isolated rainfall may continue from September 27 to October 1.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Odisha on September 25, while heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places on September 26.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also likely over Odisha on September 26. On September 25, thundersqualls with winds reaching 50–60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph are possible in parts of the state.
Strong Winds Along Odisha Coast
Squally winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast until the evening of September 25. Winds are expected to gradually decrease thereafter.
Over Chhattisgarh and interior Odisha, winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, were prevailing and are expected to gradually weaken.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Away from Sea
Sea conditions remain rough over the westcentral and northwest Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the westcentral, adjoining northwest and southwest Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha, north Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal coasts for the next 12 hours.
