Spain Train Crash: At least 64 people have been reported killed and more than 80 injured after two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Toledo province, south of Madrid, on October 28, 2026. Around 500 passengers were travelling on the two trains when the deadly accident occurred on the Madrid–Seville high-speed railway line.
Two High-Speed Trains Involved in Deadly Collision
The accident involved a Renfe AVE high-speed train and an Iryo train. Initial reports said that the collision caused several carriages to derail, with some reportedly plunging down an embankment. Emergency services rushed to the scene to rescue passengers and provide medical assistance.
According to initial reports, around 50 injured people were in serious condition. Several passengers suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries, while others were evacuated by bus from the accident site.
Survivors described the moments after the crash as chaotic, saying passengers were thrown from their seats and communication was limited immediately after the collision.
Rescue Operations Underway
Spanish emergency teams, firefighters, medical personnel and military emergency units were deployed to assist the victims. Hospitals in the surrounding region issued urgent calls for blood donations to help treat the injured.
Authorities also established identification and DNA-collection facilities in Madrid, Seville, Córdoba and Toledo to support the identification of victims.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Transport Minister Óscar Puente were among the officials involved in the government response. Sánchez visited the crash site as emergency operations continued.
Train Safety System Under Investigation
Initial accounts attributed to Transport Minister Óscar Puente raised questions about a reported failure of the automated train-control system and a subsequent decision to allow rail traffic to resume. The circumstances surrounding the collision, including the movement of the trains before the impact, require official investigation and confirmation.
The crash has raised fresh concerns about railway safety and emergency procedures. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the accident and determine whether technical failures or operational decisions contributed to the tragedy.
