Regular Confrontations Reported Along Arunachal Pradesh Border

Tensions and confrontations between Indian and Chinese forces continue at several locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border, according to a statement by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujit Singh Kapur. He said the ITBP's specialised Shaurya Commando units have played an important role in handling such situations.

Kapur made these remarks during the Himveer Samman Samaroh in Alwar, Rajasthan. The ceremony marked the ITBP's 65th Raising Day, where 136 ITBP personnel were honoured for their service.

His comments have also triggered a political response. The Congress party has demanded clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the reported border situation.

India and China Stress the Need for Border Peace

India and China have repeatedly highlighted the importance of peace and stability along their shared border. During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the need to maintain peace and implement existing border agreements and understandings.

However, the reported confrontations along the frontier have raised questions about the situation on the ground and the implementation of these commitments.

ITBP Forms Special Shaurya Commando Units

According to Kapur, the ITBP established specialised Shaurya units after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. These units were created to strengthen the force's ability to respond to challenging situations along the border.

The commandos receive specialised training known as Strike Training. Kapur said this training has helped personnel manage confrontations and prevent situations from escalating.

The Galwan Valley clash in June 2020 resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. It marked a major deterioration in relations between India and China.

ITBP Focuses on Modernisation and Advanced Technology

Kapur said conventional methods alone may not be sufficient to address the challenges posed by a modernised Chinese military. He stressed the need to upgrade the ITBP's capabilities to meet changing security requirements.

The force is focusing on specialised training, modern equipment and advanced technology to improve the effectiveness of its Shaurya Commandos.

Drone technology has also become an important part of border surveillance. According to Kapur, monitoring movements through drones has helped Indian forces respond to activities along the frontier. He also referred to Ukraine's use of drones in its conflict with Russia as an example of how this technology can influence modern warfare.

₹3,000 Crore Allocation for Drones and Anti-Drone Systems

Kapur said the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved ₹3,000 crore for procuring drones and anti-drone systems for the ITBP. The funds are expected to be made available by 2030.

The proposed investment is intended to strengthen surveillance, improve the force's ability to monitor border activity and counter potential drone-related threats.

As India and China continue to emphasise the importance of border stability, the ITBP is seeking to improve its preparedness through specialised training, modern equipment and advanced surveillance technology.
