A well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours. It is expected to further strengthen into a deep depression during the following 24 hours.
The system is likely to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and reach near the coast around the morning of September 23, 2026. The associated cyclonic circulation currently extends up to about 7.6 km above mean sea level.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Odisha and East India
The developing system is expected to bring widespread rainfall to Odisha and other parts of eastern India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at several places, with extremely heavy rainfall possible over Odisha on September 24.
Odisha may experience particularly active weather from September 21 to 27. Heavy rainfall is expected on September 21 and 26, while very heavy rainfall is likely on September 22–23 and September 25.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also expected. Over Odisha, thundersqualls with winds of 50–60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph are likely on September 23 and 24.
Rainfall in Other Eastern States
Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar are also likely to receive widespread rainfall during the coming days. Very heavy rainfall is possible over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on September 24, Bihar on September 24–25, and Odisha on September 22–23 and September 25.
The system is also expected to produce thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during the period.
Sea Conditions to Remain Rough
Sea conditions are expected to deteriorate as the system intensifies. Rough to very rough seas are likely over parts of the Bay of Bengal from September 21 to 24.
Rough to very rough conditions are also expected along and off the north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts from the evening of September 22 to the evening of September 24.
Fishermen and those involved in marine activities should remain alert and follow official weather and maritime advisories.
