Bhadrak, Odisha, 19th Sep, 2025: A shocking incident has come to light in Basudevpur Municipality area of Bhadrak district. The body of a nine-year-old girl, daughter of Sadananda Malik, was recovered on Thursday. She had been kidnapped from Raghunathpuradia village on Saturday evening.

The body was found in an abandoned coast canal, about 500 meters from her house. Police said it was lying nearly about 15 feet away from the shore. This has raised suspicion that the girl was murdered and the crime was later hidden.

After receiving the complaint of kidnapping, police launched an investigation. On Wednesday, Eastern DIG Pinak Mishra visited the area and ordered a wide search with the help of the Bhadrak ODRAF team. On Thursday morning, senior officers including Additional SP Arup Abhishek Behera, SDPO Vichitrananda Sethi and officers from Basudevpur, Chudamani and Kashia police stations supervised the search. The ODRAF team recovered the girl’s body from the canal.

The body has been sent to Cuttack SCB Medical College for post-mortem. Police suspect the girl may have been killed two days ago.

According to reports from different media sources, the child was abducted when she stepped out of her house for a call of nature. Two miscreants came on a bike and kidnapped her. The family filed a complaint immediately.

The victim’s family is devastated, and villagers have demanded that the accused be identified and given the strictest punishment. The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of minor girls in Odisha. Intellectuals point out that cases of abduction, rape, and murder of children are increasing, reflecting a grim state of women’s safety.

Locals recall that in cases like that of Pihu, Pari and others, justice was delayed or denied. The Basudevpur case has now intensified questions about police effectiveness. Residents also allege that while the police handed over the girl’s body after recovery, they had shown little urgency when the kidnapping complaint was first filed.

The suspected killing of a helpless nine-year-old, just five days after her abduction, is being seen as an open challenge to law enforcement. Villagers feel helpless, asking who poor families can rely on in such times and argue that had the victim been a child of a leader, minister, or high-ranking official, the administration would have acted with far greater urgency to ensure her rescue.

Bhadrak SP Manoj Raut has assured that the culprits will be caught soon. Villagers are angry and have demanded strict punishment for those behind the crime. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of women and minor girls in Odisha.

The grieving family is devastated, while villagers say criminals have openly challenged the police with such acts. Intellectuals have also pointed out that in cases involving ordinary families, the administration often shows less urgency compared to when influential people are victims.
