WWF-India Launches Nationwide Green Diwali Campaign 2026, Urges Citizens to Avoid Firecrackers

CNB WORLD TIMES

WWF-India’s EIACP initiative will run from October 20 to November 8, 2026, encouraging citizens to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali through reduced air pollution, responsible waste management and sustainable lifestyle choices.

WWF-India’s Programme Centre – Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has launched a nationwide Green Diwali Campaign 2026. The campaign will run from October 20 to November 8, 2026, urging citizens to avoid firecrackers and celebrate a clean, green and environmentally friendly Diwali.

The initiative promotes the principles of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and aims to encourage people to adopt sustainable practices during the festive season. The campaign will reach schools, colleges, other educational institutions, resident welfare associations (RWAs) and local communities. Special attention will be given to the 130 cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

Green Diwali Pledge Encourages Eco-Friendly Celebrations

As part of the campaign, citizens are encouraged to take the Green Diwali Pledge and commit to environmentally responsible celebrations. They are urged to avoid firecrackers and motivate family members, friends and neighbours to follow the same practice.

The campaign also encourages people to use traditional diyas and energy-efficient lights, avoid single-use plastics, segregate waste and purchase locally made products.

Schools, colleges, educational institutions and community organisations are encouraged to organise pledge-taking activities during morning assemblies, classroom sessions, rallies and community meetings. These activities aim to raise awareness about air pollution, waste reduction and the importance of protecting the environment.

Citizens Encouraged to Check Their Carbon Footprint

The campaign also encourages citizens to participate in WWF-India’s Carbon Footprint Survey. The survey helps people understand how their daily activities, consumption patterns and lifestyle choices affect their environmental footprint.

By taking the survey, individuals can identify areas where they can reduce their environmental impact and adopt more sustainable habits.

Citizens can access the survey through the following link:

How to Participate in the Green Diwali Campaign

Schools, colleges, EIACP centres, community groups and individuals participating in the campaign are requested to submit details of their activities through the online reporting form.

The submission should include the following details:

·         Name and location of the institution or organisation.

·         Details and date of the activity conducted.

·         Number of participants who took the Green Diwali Pledge.

·         Geo-tagged photographs of the activities.

·         A brief report describing the programme.

Selected entries may be featured on EIACP websites and social media platforms, helping showcase public participation and encourage more people to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

A Collective Step Towards a Cleaner Diwali

The Green Diwali Campaign 2026 seeks to bring citizens, educational institutions and local communities together to promote sustainable festive celebrations. By avoiding firecrackers, reducing waste, using energy-efficient lighting and making responsible consumption choices, people can contribute to a cleaner environment.

The campaign calls on citizens to make eco-friendly choices during Diwali and carry these sustainable habits into their everyday lives.
