The fifth edition of the India-Australia Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 began on October 19 at the Foreign Training Node in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The joint exercise will continue until November 1, 2026, with around 120 personnel each from the Indian Army and the Australian Army participating.

The exercise aims to strengthen military cooperation, improve coordination between the two armies and enhance their ability to conduct joint operations in coastal and island environments.

Indian and Australian Army Contingents

The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from the Garhwal Rifles, along with personnel from other arms and services. The Australian Army contingent consists of troops from the 13th Brigade.

The fourth edition of Exercise AUSTRAHIND was held at Irwin Barracks in Perth, Australia, from October 13 to 26, 2025.

Focus on Joint Operations in Coastal and Island Areas

Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 is being conducted under the theme “Joint Sub-Conventional Operations in Island and Coastal Environment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate.”

The exercise is designed to improve interoperability, jointmanship and operational coordination between the Indian and Australian armies. It will also help both sides develop a common understanding of tactics, techniques and procedures for conducting operations in coastal and island terrain.

Joint Training and Tactical Drills

During the exercise, soldiers from both countries will take part in joint planning, tactical drills and combat-oriented training under realistic operational conditions. The training will include aerial and maritime dimensions to prepare troops for complex operational situations.

The major areas of training include:

·         Coordinated military operations in coastal and island environments.

·         Surveillance and reconnaissance activities.

·         Protection of vital installations.

·         Response to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) situations.

·         Exchange of professional knowledge, operational experience and best practices.

These activities are expected to improve the ability of both armies to work together effectively during joint missions.

New Zealand Joins as an Observer

For the first time, an observer delegation from New Zealand will participate in Exercise AUSTRAHIND. Its presence will provide an opportunity to observe the joint training activities and gain insights into military cooperation between India and Australia.

Strengthening India-Australia Defence Cooperation

Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 is an important step towards strengthening defence ties between India and Australia. The exercise will promote mutual trust, improve operational compatibility and enhance cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.

It also reflects the shared commitment of India and Australia to maintaining peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The joint exercise is expected to further strengthen military-to-military relations and improve preparedness for coordinated operations in challenging coastal and island environments.
