India Showcases Science-Based Snow Leopard Conservation in Moscow

Moscow, August 27, 2026: India highlighted its science-based advances in snow leopard conservation at the Russian-Indian Roundtable Meeting on Snow Leopard Study and Conservation held in Moscow on August 26.

The meeting was organised at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the Partnership Agreement between the Interregional Association ‘Irbis’ and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), signed in December 2025. The partnership aims to strengthen international cooperation in snow leopard research and conservation.

The Indian delegation from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) presented the country’s progress in scientific conservation initiatives. Experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) highlighted advances in snow leopard population estimation, radio telemetry and genetic analysis, demonstrating the growing importance of scientific tools in monitoring and protecting the species.

Representatives from Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the A.N. Severtsov Institute, Moscow Zoo, Rosprirodnadzor and other leading experts also participated in the meeting. Discussions focused on strengthening collaborative research, monitoring and conservation strategies for snow leopards.

The roundtable provided an important platform for India and its international partners to exchange knowledge and experience and further strengthen cooperation for the scientific study and long-term conservation of the snow leopard.
