Student Drowns During Ganesh Idol Immersion in Bhadrak

Bhadrak, Odisha, 16th Sep, 2026: A Class 9 student died after drowning in a pond during a Ganesh idol immersion ceremony in Digachhia under Chandbali block of Bhadrak district.

The deceased student has been identified as Piyush Das, a resident of the Charampa area of Bhadrak. He was a boarder at Vishwabharati Residential School, a private educational institution in the area.

According to reports, a group of students went to a pond near the Government Agricultural Research Centre for the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony.

During the immersion, Piyush reportedly slipped into the pond and drowned.

His fellow students searched for him but could not locate him. They then informed the school authorities about the incident.

The school authorities subsequently informed the fire services department. Fire personnel reached the spot and conducted a search operation in the pond.

Piyush was later located by the fire personnel of Gadi Fire Station. However, he had already died.

Questions Over Student Safety

The incident has raised concerns about the safety arrangements made for students during religious and cultural programmes organised by educational institutions.

Local residents have alleged that negligence on the part of the school authorities may have contributed to the incident. However, these allegations would need to be established through an impartial investigation.

The incident has also raised questions about whether adequate supervision, safety arrangements and emergency measures were in place when the students went to the pond.
