New Delhi, August 24, 2026: A low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Odisha is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of eastern and central India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system, located over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and north Odisha on August 24, is likely to move nearly northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Odisha today.
Odisha and Jharkhand received isolated very heavy rainfall on August 24, while Chhattisgarh may experience very heavy rain on August 25. West and East Madhya Pradesh are also likely to witness very heavy rainfall during August 25-26. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Vidarbha and Maharashtra during the coming days. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several areas, with winds reaching up to 50-60 kmph in some regions.
The weather agency reported that very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm was recorded during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am IST on August 24 over Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Madhya Pradesh. Heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm was recorded at isolated places in several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, East Rajasthan, Kerala, Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
The IMD forecast widespread rainfall over parts of Central, East and Northeast India during the coming days. Odisha received widespread rainfall on August 24 and is likely to receive widespread rainfall again from August 27-30, while Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may also experience widespread rainfall through August 30. In central India, widespread rainfall is likely over West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh during different periods between August 24 and 30.
In South Peninsular India, rainfall activity is expected to remain relatively subdued overall during the next week, although several areas may continue to receive rain. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala during August 25-26. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also expected in several southern states.
