New Delhi, August 24, 2026: Indian Railways has launched a special cleanliness drive to clean and disinfect drinking-water tanks, filters, coolers and other water facilities at railway stations. The initiative aims to ensure that passengers continue to get safe, clean and hygienic drinking water.
Under the drive, Zonal Railways will inspect water sources, treatment plants, overhead and underground tanks, water booths, taps and dispensing points. Tanks will be drained, cleaned and disinfected, while damaged tanks, pipelines and filters will be repaired or replaced. Water coolers and UV/RO purification systems will also be checked and maintained.
Railways will conduct physical, chemical and bacteriological testing of water at various points, along with daily residual-chlorine monitoring. Zonal Railways will submit station-wise details of deficiencies and corrective action taken so that problems are resolved in a time-bound manner. The measures will also cover railway colonies and workplaces to strengthen safe drinking-water facilities for passengers and railway staff.
