Odisha Weather Update: Extremely Heavy Rain Batters State, More Heavy Rain Forecast

Bhubaneswar, August 24, 2026: Odisha remains under the grip of an active monsoon system, with extremely heavy rainfall recorded in the state during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM IST on August 23. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued widespread rainfall, including very heavy rain over Odisha during August 24–26.
????️ Odisha Weather in the Last 24 Hours
Extremely heavy rainfall of 30 cm or more was recorded over Odisha during the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM IST on August 23. The state was among the regions that received the most intense rainfall during this period.
The heavy downpour has also caused flooding and waterlogging in several areas. According to reports citing the weather office, Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi recorded 34.5 cm, while Kashipur in Rayagada received 21.2 cm of rain.
???? Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal
The IMD said a Low Pressure Area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas at 5:30 AM IST on August 23. The system was still present over the same region at 8:30 AM and was expected to move nearly northwestwards across North Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal during the following 24 hours.
This system, along with the active monsoon trough, is expected to maintain strong rainfall activity over Odisha.

According to the IMD forecast:
· August 24–26: Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha.
· August 24: Heavy rainfall activity is expected to remain significant under the influence of the low-pressure system.
· August 25: Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are possible in parts of Odisha.
· August 27–29: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue.
· August 23: Isolated extremely heavy rainfall was forecast over Odisha.
· Rainfall is expected to remain fairly widespread to widespread over Odisha during August 23–29.
⚡ Thunderstorm and Strong Wind Warning
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also possible. The IMD forecast indicates gusty winds of around 30–40 kmph, occasionally reaching 50 kmph, during thunderstorm activity in Odisha on August 25.

Rough to squally sea conditions are expected along the Odisha coast during this period. Fishermen should follow the latest IMD and local administration advisories and avoid venturing into the sea when warnings are in force.
