IMD Warns of Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal

CNB WORLD TIMES

Bhubaneswar, July 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for Odisha, with extremely heavy rainfall expected at isolated places on July 14 and 15. The weather office has advised people to remain alert as a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the north Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Bangladesh is likely to strengthen into a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts. This weather system is expected to intensify rainfall activity across Odisha over the next few days.

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across Odisha from July 14 to 17, while scattered rain is likely to continue from July 18 to 20. Several districts may witness thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds along with intense rain.

The department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at many places, while extremely heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations on July 14 and 15. Very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places on July 16. Localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, disruption to road traffic and reduced visibility are possible due to continuous heavy rain.

Recent rainfall has already been significant in several parts of the state. During the last 24 hours, Kendrapara received 16 cm of rainfall, followed by Gobindpur and Bari with 12 cm each, while Balasore recorded 10 cm. Strong winds were also reported, with Bhadrak recording gusts of 44 kmph.

The IMD has advised residents, especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. Farmers have also been advised to take necessary precautions to protect standing crops and agricultural equipment.

A fishermen warning has also been issued. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast from July 14 to July 19, as rough sea conditions and strong winds are expected over the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities are closely monitoring the developing weather system and have urged district administrations to remain prepared for any rain-related emergencies. People are advised to follow official weather updates and warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department.
