A cyclonic storm is forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is likely to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. The system is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and rough seas to several coastal states.

System Strengthens Over Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal early on October 24, which intensified into a depression by the morning of October 25.

At 11:30 am today, it was centred near 10.8°N and 88.6°E, about 460 km west-southwest of Port Blair, 950 km east-southeast of Chennai, and 960 km southeast of Visakhapatnam.

The system is moving west-northwestwards at around 7 kmph. It is expected to intensify into a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm by October 27 morning. Further strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm is likely by October 28 morning.

Landfall Expected Near Kakinada

The IMD forecast indicates the storm will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by the evening or night of October 28.

During landfall, wind speeds may reach 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

A storm surge of about 1 metre above astronomical tide could flood low-lying coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam (Puducherry).

States Likely to be Affected

Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Light to moderate rain at most places with heavy rain at isolated spots on October 25.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: Moderate to heavy rainfall from **  October 25 to 28, with very heavy rain on October 27.

Sea conditions are expected to turn very rough to high, especially over the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha from October 26 to 29.
