As of August 7, 2026, the total area sown under Kharif crops across India has reached 967.92 lakh hectares, covering about 88% of the normal seasonal area.
The area under Kharif crops is slightly lower than the 985.89 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year, showing a decline of around 1.8%.
The minor slowdown in sowing is mainly linked to variations in rainfall and delayed monsoon progress in some regions during the early part of the season.
Water-intensive crops such as paddy have recorded a small decline in coverage. However, hardy crops and pulses remain close to their normal sowing levels.
The overall Kharif sowing progress indicates that agricultural activities are continuing across the country, with regional variations influencing the pace of crop coverage.
