Multiple Cyclonic Systems to Trigger Heavy Rainfall Across India Till June 17

Isolated heavy rainfall expected in Odisha during ‘Rajo Festival’

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity across several parts of the country till June 17 due to multiple cyclonic circulations, troughs and other weather systems active over the Indian region.

Key Weather Systems

Several upper-air cyclonic circulations are currently influencing weather conditions across India. These include systems over Haryana, southeast Uttar Pradesh, west-central Bay of Bengal near north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka.

A western disturbance is also active over northern parts of the country. In addition, a seasonal trough extends from Punjab to Bangladesh through Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Meteorologists say the interaction of these systems is creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds over many regions.

Heavy Rainfall Likely in Eastern India

Eastern India is expected to witness significant rainfall activity during the coming days.

Odisha is likely to receive widespread rainfall during June 12-13, with isolated heavy rainfall expected between June 12 and June 15. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may occur from June 13 to June 15.

Jharkhand and Bihar are also expected to receive widespread rainfall. Heavy rainfall is likely in Bihar and Jharkhand during June 12-13. Very heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Bihar on June 11.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during the forecast period.

Northeast India Under Heavy Rain Alert

Northeastern states are expected to receive widespread rainfall throughout the week.

Heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh during June 12-13 and over Assam and Meghalaya during June 11-13.

Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely across the region.

Northwest India to Experience Stormy Weather

Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir are likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds over the next few days.

Heavy rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand during June 11-12 and over parts of Uttar Pradesh on June 11.

Some areas may experience thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 60-80 kmph. Hailstorm activity is also likely in isolated locations of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and western Uttar Pradesh during June 11-12.

Dust storms are expected over Rajasthan till June 13.

Central India to Receive Rainfall

Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are expected to receive scattered to widespread rainfall during the forecast period.

Heavy thunderstorm activity accompanied by strong winds is likely in Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. Chhattisgarh is expected to receive widespread rainfall on June 12.

South India to Witness Active Monsoon Conditions

Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are expected to receive widespread rainfall due to the cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal and southern peninsula.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe during June 11-15. Coastal Karnataka may also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially on June 12.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and Karnataka on different days during the forecast period.

West India Forecast

Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Gujarat are expected to receive scattered rainfall till June 17.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely over Maharashtra and Konkan regions during the next few days.
