Jagannath Tahia Row Sparks Devotee Concerns

CNB WORLD TIMES

The removal of Lord Jagannath’s traditional Tahia (floral headgear) during the Pahandi procession of Rath Yatra 2026 has triggered widespread debate and concern among devotees across Odisha, India, and abroad.

Lord Jagannath, worshipped as the Lord of the Universe, holds a unique place in spiritual, cultural, and social life. The annual Rath Yatra in Puri attracts millions of devotees from different religions, communities, and countries. The festival is known for its centuries-old traditions, rituals, and the grand chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

The Jagannath culture is widely regarded as a symbol of equality, harmony, and inclusiveness. Devotees from different faiths participate in the festival, and the sharing of Mahaprasad is considered a powerful example of social unity beyond caste, creed, or religion.

The controversy began when Lord Jagannath’s Tahia was removed during the Pahandi ritual. According to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and temple servitors, continuous rain made the floral crown extremely heavy after absorbing water. Officials stated that the headgear contained bamboo supports and that its removal was necessary to ensure the safety of servitors and protect the deity during the procession.

SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee clarified that the Lord was already covered with a protective rain shield (Gilapa). He said servitors decided to remove the rain-soaked Tahia after it became difficult to carry safely and that the temple administration was not directly involved in the decision.

However, the incident disappointed many devotees, who viewed the removal of the traditional headgear as an unusual event. Several devotees questioned why only Lord Jagannath’s Tahia was removed while the Tahias of Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra remained intact.

The issue also sparked political reactions. The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) described the incident as a ritual lapse that hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees. Leader of Opposition Pramila Mallik questioned the explanation provided by the temple administration and demanded accountability.

BJD leaders further raised concerns over the conduct of the Rath Yatra, including delays during the Pahandi procession, crowd management issues, and overall festival administration. They urged the government to review the arrangements and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Many devotees believe that the centuries-old traditions of the Jagannath Temple should be preserved with utmost care and that any lapses affecting religious sentiments should be thoroughly examined. They have called for a detailed review of the incident and stronger measures to safeguard the sanctity of the world-famous Rath Yatra.

The Tahia controversy has once again highlighted the deep emotional connection millions of devotees share with Lord Jagannath and the importance of maintaining the sacred traditions associated with the annual festival.
