Andy Burnham Takes Charge as UK Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being elected as the new leader of the Labour Party. His appointment follows the resignation of Keir Starmer, making Burnham the UK's seventh prime minister in the past decade. As leader of the party that commands a majority in the House of Commons, Burnham was invited by the King to form a new government and officially took office after meeting the monarch.

In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham pledged to make politics "work better" and said Britain must "regain our stability." He promised to restore public trust in government, tackle rough sleeping across the UK, strengthen public services, boost economic growth, and honour Britain's defence commitments with international partners. Leaders from around the world congratulated Burnham on taking office.

Later in the day, several senior Cabinet ministers, including the Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, announced their departures as Burnham began reshaping his government with a new ministerial team.

Earlier, Keir Starmer stepped down after becoming the shortest-serving Labour Party prime minister in British history. In his farewell speech outside Downing Street, Starmer described serving as prime minister as the "privilege of my life" and wished Burnham every success in leading the country.

Andy Burnham's Political Career

Born on 7 January 1970 in Aintree, Merseyside, Andy Burnham has been one of the Labour Party's most prominent politicians for over two decades. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh from 2001 to 2017, holding several senior Cabinet positions, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Culture Secretary, and Health Secretary under former Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair.

After leaving Parliament, Burnham was elected Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017 and won re-election twice, becoming widely known for championing regional devolution, improving public transport, expanding affordable housing initiatives, and advocating for greater investment in northern England. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic brought him national recognition for strongly defending the interests of Greater Manchester.
