New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister will undertake a State Visit to the Republic of Seychelles from June 27 to 29, 2026, at the invitation of President Dr. Patrick Herminie, to participate as the Guest of Honour in the country's Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations.
Ahead of the visit, the Prime Minister described Seychelles as a valued maritime neighbour and a key partner in India's Vision MAHASAGAR and its shared commitment to the Global South. The visit also coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, built on mutual trust, democratic values, respect for diversity and strong people-to-people ties.
The Prime Minister said the visit follows President Herminie's successful State Visit to India in February 2026 and will provide an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding collaboration in maritime security, economic development, regional stability and people-centric partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles, a milestone reflecting the close democratic and parliamentary traditions shared by the two countries.
He will also interact with the vibrant Indian community in Seychelles, acknowledging its longstanding role in strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces, along with two Indian Navy ships, will participate in the National Day parade and cultural events, highlighting the deep defence and maritime cooperation between India and Seychelles.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the visit would further deepen the longstanding partnership, enhance maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean, and advance the shared vision of a secure, peaceful and prosperous region.
About Seychelles
The Republic of Seychelles is an island nation comprising 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean, located northeast of Madagascar. It has a population of around 135,000, with nearly three-quarters residing on the main island of Mahé.
Seychelles gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1976 after more than a century of British administration. Today, it is regarded as one of Africa's highest-income economies on a per-capita basis, with tourism and fisheries serving as the main pillars of its economy.
Renowned for its pristine beaches, granite rock formations and exceptional biodiversity, Seychelles is among the world's leading luxury tourism destinations. The country also ranks among Africa's top performers in the Human Development Index and has consistently recorded strong institutional and innovation indicators.
Despite its economic achievements, Seychelles faces long-term challenges related to climate change, environmental sustainability and rising obesity rates. The island nation continues to invest in sustainable development while strengthening regional cooperation across the Indian Ocean.
India and Seychelles enjoy a close strategic partnership spanning defence, maritime security, capacity building, healthcare, education, development assistance and cultural exchanges, making the relationship one of India's most important partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region.
