Nilagiri, Odisha, 31st Dec, 2025: A very unusual incident took place at the Nilagiri police station last Monday. It was not about a thief or a criminal, but about a goat. Two people claimed ownership of the same goat, and the issue created so much confusion that the police had to intervene. Soon, the incident became a topic of discussion not only in Nilagiri but across Odisha.
The dispute began when a clash broke out at the police station over the ownership of the goat. As the matter could not be resolved on the spot, the goat was detained at the police station. Both parties filed complaints and demanded that the goat be handed over to them. One claimant even stated that the goat was fasting, which added more drama to the situation.
Monalisa Das of Sanataa village, NAC Ward No. 8, Nilagiri, is a goat farmer. To prevent her goats from getting lost, she paints their horns for identification. About one and a half months ago, one of her female goats went missing. Despite extensive searching, the goat could not be found, and Monalisa assumed it was lost forever.
Last Friday, Monalisa came to know that a goat resembling her missing one was in the house of Lakhman Bindhani of Gudikhania village, Nilagiri. The goat was brought to the police station. However, Lakhman’s wife claimed that the goat had been purchased from Somnathpur village for ₹2,000, strengthening their claim of ownership.
To identify the real owner, the police decided to conduct a Test Identification (TI) parade of the goat. Both claimants were made to stand in a line while the goat was released. To everyone’s surprise, the goat did not go towards either Monalisa or Lakhman. As the goat failed to identify its owner, the police kept it at the station, increasing public curiosity.
The situation became even more amusing when another goat was brought to the police station as a witness. However, the witness goat also failed to clarify the matter, creating laughter and disbelief among those present. The unusual scene attracted widespread attention and became a talking point in the area.
Meanwhile, Monalisa arrived at the police station with cabbage leaves, worried that the goat was hungry. She stood beside the goat, crying and calling it by the name “Kuni Kuni,” which she had given it earlier. The emotional moment touched many onlookers, but the goat still did not clearly respond to either claimant.
The police gave both parties three days to submit proof of ownership. The Nilagiri SDPO stated that the matter is under investigation and assured that the real owner would be given justice. Until a final decision is made, the goat will remain in the custody of a third party.
Interestingly, a stray he-goat that had been roaming near the police station for a long time seemed to have found a companion in the disputed goat. Regardless of the legal outcome, the strange TI parade of the goat has left Nilagiri with a memorable and humorous story that people will talk about for a long time.
