Kolkata, 26th April 2026: Millions of voters have started voting in the state elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. These elections are very important and closely watched.

In West Bengal, voting is taking place in 152 out of 294 seats. The polling is happening across 16 districts. A total of 1,478 candidates are contesting in this phase. The second phase of voting will take place next week.

The main contest in the state is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is trying to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The TMC is aiming to win a fourth term in power. The BJP has never formed a government in West Bengal before.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the BJP will win 110 seats in the first phase of polling. He also promised to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) for the Matua community.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed a public meeting in Bagdah in North 24 Parganas district. He said that West Bengal would be freed from what he called the “syndicate” of TMC, Congress, and Communist parties.

He also spoke about the importance of Bengal in India’s history. He said that West Bengal is known as a land of art, literature, and culture. He added that the state has played a major role in shaping India’s identity and has contributed the national anthem and national song.
