Bhubaneswar, 7th April’26: Students and workers can now easily access 5 kg LPG cylinders by showing their identity cards.

On Monday, the departmental secretary clarified the confusion regarding the sale and availability of 5 kg LPG cylinders in the state. He said that oil companies are allowed to provide 5 kg cylinders to anyone who shows valid identity proof. Students and workers without permanent residence can also purchase these cylinders.

Sanjay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary of the Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Department, stated that only illegal vendors are being restricted. Legal sale of cylinders will continue without any issue.

Earlier, confusion arose after the minister announced that 5 kg gas cylinders would not be sold in the open market. This led to protests from various political parties and organizations. Many feared that students and workers living in cities would face difficulties. After this, the department issued a clarification to remove all doubts.

The statement was made at Annapurna Conference Hall in Lok Seva Bhavan in the presence of senior officials from oil companies. Officials confirmed that there is no shortage of domestic LPG in the state. The supply of commercial gas is also improving. At present, about 70 percent of the supply has been restored, while 20 percent is being prioritized for hospitals, hostels, and food centers.

The department has taken strict action against illegal trading. Black marketing and illegal storage of LPG cylinders are being closely monitored. So far, 1,633 places have been inspected, 288 cases have been registered, and 3,105 cylinders have been seized. Strict action is being taken against those involved in illegal activities.

Officials also informed that 5 kg cylinders are being provided through e-KYC verification for domestic connections. Oil companies are organizing camps in different areas to help students and migrant workers get these cylinders easily.

In another initiative, mini LPG cylinders are now available directly at counters for people without a fixed residence. Brands like Indane Chhotu, Bharat Gas Mini, and HP Gas Appu can be purchased within 10 minutes.

This initiative is a major relief for migrants, workers, students, and families who do not have permanent address proof.
