Air India Flight Reports Sudden Altitude Loss, Investigation Underway

An Air India A320 aircraft operati ng flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi experienced a sudden loss of altitude of approximately 300 feet during cruise on August 4, 2026. The aircraft stabilised and landed safely at Delhi.

The aircraft, VT-EXO, was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members comprising two pilots and six cabin crew. A few passengers and cabin crew members reportedly sustained injuries during the occurrence.

As part of the prescribed safety procedures, both pilots underwent psychoactive substance screening. The screening result of the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) required confirmatory testing. The samples have been sent to a designated laboratory, and the final report is awaited.

The incident has been classified as a Serious Incident and is under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Pending completion of the investigation and prescribed procedures, the DGCA has taken both flight crew members off the roster. Further action will be based on the investigation findings and confirmatory test results.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and the DGCA have reiterated their commitment to maintaining high aviation safety standards and ensuring that such occurrences are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken under the applicable regulations.
