Tokyo, Oct 21 — Japan has made history as Sanae Takaichi becomes the country’s first female prime minister. The 64-year-old leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was elected by Japan’s parliament on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the nation’s politics.
Takaichi won 237 votes in the 465-member Lower House, comfortably crossing the majority mark. She also secured 125 votes in the Upper House, just enough for victory. She will formally take office this evening after being appointed by the Emperor, followed by her first press conference.
The LDP, under Takaichi’s leadership, has formed a new coalition government with the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), after ending its long-time alliance with Komeito. The new coalition plans to focus on economic reform, national security, energy, and foreign policy.
Takaichi’s Cabinet includes both allies and former rivals. Koizumi Shinjiro has been named defence minister, Hayashi Yoshimasa will serve as internal affairs and communications minister, Motegi Toshimitsu as foreign minister, and Katayama Satsuki as finance minister.
Takaichi, born in Nara, began her political career in 1993 and has held several key positions in previous governments. A former heavy metal drummer, she is known for her conservative views and strong stance on national security.
She became the president of the LDP earlier this month, after winning the party leadership election. Following her victory, she secured a coalition deal with JIP to ensure a stable majority in parliament.
In her first statement as prime minister, Takaichi said she would work to “make Japan’s economy stronger and reshape Japan as a country responsible for future generations.”
Her election has been welcomed both in Japan and abroad. In her hometown of Nara, locals praised her determination and leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Takaichi on her historic win. “Heartiest congratulations, Sanae Takaichi, on your election as the Prime Minister of Japan. I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” Modi said in a post, calling her election “a historic milestone.”
Takaichi succeeds Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned last month after his party’s poor election performance. She will be Japan’s 104th prime minister — and its first woman to hold the position.
