India marked a significant milestone in green transportation with the launch of its first indigenous hydrogen-powered water taxi in Varanasi. The service was officially inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on December 10, 2025, at the scenic Namo Ghat. With this launch, Varanasi has taken a major step toward cleaner mobility and the modernisation of river-based transport.

The water taxi begins its commercial operations on the route between Ravidas Ghat and Namo Ghat, offering a smooth and eco-friendly commute for passengers. Authorities have confirmed that the service will soon be expanded to include Asi Ghat and Markandeya Dham, strengthening connectivity across the city’s riverfront.

Constructed at Cochin Shipyard, the vessel stands as a proud example of the *Make in India* initiative. It is powered by a hybrid electric–hydrogen engine, enabling zero air and noise emissions. Reports indicate that the vessel is equipped with five hydrogen cylinders and features three-kilowatt solar panels, further enhancing its sustainability.

Passenger comfort and safety have also been prioritised. The taxi can accommodate up to 50 people and provides vegetarian refreshments onboard. It is equipped with CCTV cameras for constant surveillance and bio-toilets for improved hygiene. The service will operate 7–8 round trips per day, ensuring regular and reliable transport for locals and tourists.

During the inauguration, Sonowal highlighted how the introduction of this vessel reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote sustainable development and revive India’s waterways. He noted that Varanasi is rapidly emerging as a vibrant hub of inland water transport, supported by successful initiatives such as MV Ganga Vilas, new cruise circuits, and expanding water metro systems.

With this pioneering water taxi service, Varanasi not only strengthens its role as a cultural and spiritual centre but also steps boldly into a future driven by green technology and modern mobility.
