Bhubaneswar, Odisha, 23/07/2025: The death report of Soumyashree Bisi, a B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College in Balasore, is going viral in social media and raising serious questions. Her death by self-immolation has shocked the nation. Soumyashree died on July 14 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, three days after setting herself on fire in front of her college gate. She had sustained 90% burns.

Shockingly, the timing of the death report has stirred public outrage. It is being questioned how the death certificate could have been printed immediately after doctors declared her clinically dead. According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar's Department of Burns Centre, the death time is recorded as 23:46 hrs (11:46 PM) on July 14, 2025 — exactly the same time as the clinical declaration.

The issue has sparked debate, especially since the official declaration of her death came only after the visit of the Hon’ble President of India and the Chief Minister of Odisha. Many citizens of Odisha are asking: Was the report prepared in advance and kept ready, awaiting only the press of a button?

The medical update issued by AIIMS states that Soumyashree was admitted to the Burns ICU on July 12, 2025, at 5:15 PM, referred from DHH Balasore. She was treated with IV fluids, antibiotics, intubation, mechanical ventilation, and renal replacement therapy. Despite all efforts, she was declared clinically dead at 11:46 PM on July 14.

The report was signed by senior doctors including Dr. Sanjay Kumar Giri (Addl. Prof & HOD), Dr. Santanu Suba (Asso. Prof.), Dr. Syam Sundar Behera (Asst. Prof.), Dr. Devishree Das (Asst. Prof., Anesthesiology), and Dr. Mahalingam V (Nursing Superintendent-II).

Soumyashree had repeatedly raised complaints of sexual harassment against Assistant Professor Samir Kumar Sahoo, but no serious action was taken. She voiced her concerns through written complaints and on social media, tagging authorities like the Department of Higher Education, Odisha CMO, Union Education Ministry, and National Commission for Women.

In a final act of protest, she immolated herself in full public view on July 12. Her tragic death triggered statewide outrage, mass protests by political parties, women’s groups, student bodies, and civil society. Odisha observed a 12-hour shutdown in solidarity.

The public is now questioning the timing of the report, calling it politically influenced and unethical. This incident has raised grave concerns about institutional accountability. There is growing demand for a high-level, impartial investigation into Soumyashree’s case — not only to ensure justice but also to reaffirm the value of an individual’s life in India.
