New Delhi, 19th August 2025: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDIA alliance have announced their candidates for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
The NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its candidate. He was introduced to MPs during the ruling alliance’s Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday at the Parliament Library building. Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to all MPs, including those from the Opposition, to extend unanimous support to Radhakrishnan.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju praised Radhakrishnan’s clean public image. “There is no controversy in his life, no corruption, no stain. He has lived a very simple life and has only worked for society and the country. If such a person becomes the Vice President, it will be a matter of great happiness for the country,” he said.
Radhakrishnan will file his nomination on August 20 at 11 am. Around 160 members, including 20 proposers and 20 supporters, are expected to accompany him. The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9.
Earlier, PM Modi felicitated Radhakrishnan in the presence of senior leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and several ministers and MPs.
Meanwhile, the opposition INDIA alliance has announced former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the decision was taken unanimously as part of an ideological battle.
“B. Sudershan Reddy is one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career, including as judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, and Judge of the Supreme Court. He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic, and political justice,” Kharge stated.
He further said that Reddy’s judgments reflected his commitment to protecting the Constitution, fundamental rights, and the poor.
With both alliances fielding their nominees, the Vice Presidential election is set to witness a contest on September 9.
