The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported active monsoon conditions with multiple weather systems influencing rainfall across the country. The monsoon trough is currently running south of its normal position, while a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked system. Persisting over the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts, the system is likely to strengthen into a depression within 12 hours and cross the coast by the forenoon of August 19.
Additionally, a shear zone along latitude 19°N and a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining areas are expected to further enhance rainfall activity.
Forecast and Warnings by Region
West India:
Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Konkan, Goa, and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on August 19, and over Gujarat on August 19–20. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat till August 22. Strong surface winds (40–50 kmph) are expected across the region, with light to moderate rain continuing for the next seven days.
South Peninsular India:
Coastal and North Interior Karnataka are set to receive extremely heavy rainfall on August 19. Heavy to very heavy rain is predicted for Telangana, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh till August 20, with strong winds persisting until August 19. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and adjoining areas during the next five days.
East & Central India:
Heavy rain is likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Vidarbha, and Bihar between August 19–24, with very heavy rainfall in parts of East and West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar on specific dates. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected across the region in the next five days.
Northwest India:
Rainfall activity will intensify in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan over the coming week. Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan are likely to witness very heavy rainfall between August 21–24. Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh may also receive heavy showers during this period.
Northeast India:
The region is expected to experience sustained rainfall through the week, with heavy to very heavy showers over Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya between August 20–24. Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely in many places over the next three days.
IMD Advisory:
The IMD has advised fishermen and coastal residents in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to remain cautious due to rough sea conditions. Strong winds are also expected over western and southern coastal areas, posing risks of localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying regions.
