EC Prepares to Announce Bihar Assembly Elections Dates Soon
Patna, Bihar, 26th Sep, 2025: With the political atmosphere heating up in Bihar, attention has now shifted to when the Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the schedule for the 2025 Assembly elections. While no official dates have been declared, several developments suggest the polls will likely be conducted in the first half of November.
According to sources, the Election Commission has directed the Bihar Chief Secretary and the Chief Electoral Officer to complete all transfers and postings of government officers who have served in the same place for more than three years. A compliance report has been sought by October 6, hinting that the poll schedule could be announced after this deadline. This is a routine exercise to ensure neutrality in the run-up to voting.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with the two Election Commissioners, is expected to visit Bihar soon to review preparations. The final voter list will be published on September 30.
The 2020 Bihar Assembly election was held in three phases — on October 28, November 3, and November 7 — with the results announced on November 10. This year too, the schedule is likely to consider major festivals. With Diwali and Chhath Puja falling between October 18 and October 28, officials are expected to push voting to the period between November 5 and November 15.
The current Assembly’s term ends on November 22, and a new House must be elected and sworn in before then. Reports suggest the election may be spread across two phases, unlike the three-phase exercise in 2020.
The upcoming polls will witness a high-stakes contest between the ruling BJP–JDU alliance and the opposition Mahagathbandhan led by the RJD and Congress. The election will also be conducted amid controversy over the Election Commission’s ‘special intensive revision’ of the voter list, which removed nearly 65 lakh names. While the opposition has alleged that the move targets marginalized groups, the EC insists it is aimed at removing ineligible entries, including foreign nationals and duplicate registrations.
With the stage set and preparations underway, Bihar is likely to see polling in November, once the festive season concludes.
