Odisha Creates History: 1,174 kg ‘Pakhala’ Sets Guinness World Record on Pakhala Dibasa

Bhubaneswar, March 25, 2026: Odisha marked a historic moment on the occasion of Pakhala Dibasa (World Pakhala Day) by achieving a Guinness World Record for preparing the largest serving of fermented rice (Pakhala). The grand event was organised by the Odisha Tourism Department at Panthanivas in Bhubaneswar.

A massive 1,174 kg of pakhala was prepared in a single container using around 850 kg of rice. The traditional Odia dish was served with 326 varieties of side dishes, highlighting the rich culinary diversity and agricultural heritage of the state.

A Global Recognition for Odia Cuisine

The record-breaking event aimed to promote Odisha’s traditional food culture on the global stage. Pakhala, known for its cooling and probiotic properties, is a staple food in the state, especially during the summer season.

The celebration of Pakhala Dibasa, observed every year on March 20 since 2011, is dedicated to honouring this humble yet significant dish and spreading awareness about its cultural importance.

 Grand Celebration with Cultural Significance

The event featured a unique display inspired by the iconic wheel of the Konark Sun Temple, attracting large numbers of visitors and locals. The visual presentation reflected Odisha’s deep-rooted traditions and artistic excellence.

Adding to the cultural spirit, sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik created a beautiful sand sculpture of pakhala on the beach in Puri, further amplifying the celebration.

 Leadership Applauds the Achievement

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who attended the event along with Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, called the achievement a proud moment for all Odias.

He stated that the milestone reflects the state’s commitment to taking its rich culinary heritage from local to global and strengthening Odisha’s identity as a hub of culture and gastronomy.

Food with a Purpose: Zero Waste Initiative

The event also carried a strong social message. In collaboration with the Robin Hood Army, the entire prepared pakhala was distributed to more than 2,000 underprivileged people, ensuring a zero-wastage policy.

 Cultural Roots and Spiritual Connection

Pakhala is not just a dish but a way of life in Odisha. The state’s culture, deeply influenced by Lord Jagannath, reflects simplicity and inclusiveness. In the Jagannath tradition, pakhala is also offered as part of rituals, symbolising equality beyond caste, creed, or religion.

 Social Reality Sparks Discussion

While the celebration showcased grandeur, a viral image on social media presented a contrasting reality—two children eating pakhala with only salt due to poverty. Though the authenticity of the image remains unverified, it sparked discussions among intellectuals and citizens about the need to ensure basic food security in remote areas.

Many voices emphasised that the true success of Pakhala Dibasa lies not just in records but in improving the living conditions of people across the state.

A Symbol of Survival and Identity

Despite economic and social challenges, pakhala continues to be a lifeline food for many in Odisha. Its recognition at the global level highlights not only its cultural value but also its importance as an affordable and sustainable source of nutrition.

The record-setting event stands as a blend of tradition, celebration, and social responsibility—making Odisha’s beloved dish shine on the world stage.
