ECI Holds Media Officers' Conference to Strengthen Election Communication

CNB WORLD TIMES

New Delhi, 3rd July, 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) organised its second one-day Conference for Media and Communication Officers, bringing together more than 260 Media Nodal Officers (MNOs), Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs), District Media Nodal Officers, District Public Relations Officers (DPROs), and senior officials from Public Relations Departments of 16 States and Union Territories.

Addressing the conference, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that every decision and action of the Commission is guided by the Constitution, electoral laws, and written instructions issued in a transparent manner. He urged officials to actively counter false narratives and misinformation circulating on social media, adding that the record voter turnout in recent Assembly elections reflects the trust of Indian voters in the electoral system.

Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi highlighted the growing challenge of AI-generated content, deepfakes, and misleading digital campaigns that can weaken public confidence in democratic institutions. He asked Media and Communication Officers to respond to such challenges by following the Commission's rules and guidelines and to strengthen voter awareness, particularly among young citizens, through Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs).

The conference included sessions on communication strategies throughout the election cycle, electoral laws related to media, preparation of press notes, effective use of traditional and social media, tackling misinformation, engaging young voters, and communicating ECI initiatives to the public.

Participants also attended demonstrations on the preparation of electoral rolls, polling procedures, and vote counting, followed by a guided visit to the Exhibition and Media Corner. Officers from States that recently conducted elections shared their experiences and best practices during interactive sessions.

The programme concluded with a question-and-answer session between participants and the Election Commission.

The conference comes at a time when allegations of vote theft and misuse of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) frequently emerge after election results, leading to public debate over the fairness of the electoral process. Regular interaction with the media and proactive communication are expected to improve transparency, address concerns, counter misinformation, and strengthen public confidence in India's democratic institutions.
