Kolkata, 3rd July, 2026: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla inaugurated a two-day Orientation Programme for newly elected Members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in Kolkata, urging legislators to strengthen democratic values through informed law-making, constructive debates, and people-centric governance.
He said public representatives should rise above constituency politics and work for the overall development of the State. Stressing that legislative debates should focus on practical solutions rather than criticism alone, he encouraged Members to base their discussions on facts, research, and reasoned arguments.
Shri Birla highlighted the importance of continuous learning, active participation in Assembly proceedings, and the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence to improve legislative functioning. He also emphasized that democracy thrives on dialogue, consensus, and respectful dissent.
The two-day programme includes technical sessions on legislative procedures, parliamentary practices, financial business, committee systems, ethics, and the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA). It is being organized by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), Lok Sabha Secretariat, in collaboration with the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
