Bhubaneswar, 10th March, 2026: The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha has introduced a new provision allowing Plus II students to improve their marks by reappearing in one subject after the declaration of results. The initiative, which will be implemented from the 2026 academic session, aims to provide students with a fair opportunity to enhance their academic performance and improve their prospects for higher education and competitive examinations.
Under the new system, students who successfully pass the Plus II board examinations will be allowed to appear for an improvement examination in one subject to secure better marks. The improvement exam will be conducted within 60 days of the publication of the main examination results. The results of the improvement test will also be declared within this timeframe, ensuring that students can use their revised scores for further admission processes.
Officials said the decision was taken keeping in mind the interests of students, particularly those who score below 75 percent marks and often face challenges while appearing for national-level entrance examinations such as NEET and other competitive tests. By allowing students to improve their marks, the Council aims to help meritorious candidates strengthen their academic records and enhance their chances of securing admission to reputed institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other prestigious programmes.
The new provision will follow a system similar to the pattern adopted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). According to CHSE officials, if a student scores lower marks in the improvement examination than in the original board exam, the higher marks obtained in the main examination will remain valid. This ensures that students do not face any disadvantage while attempting to improve their performance.
However, the improvement exam facility will be available only to students who have passed the main Plus II examination. Those who fail in any subject will not be eligible for the improvement test and will instead have to appear for the instant examination, which will be conducted simultaneously with the regular Plus II examinations.
Meanwhile, CHSE has also announced revisions in the examination schedule for the 2026 Plus II board examinations. As per the updated timetable, the Mother Tongue paper originally scheduled for March 11(Wednesday), 2026, has been postponed to March 23(Monday), 2026. Similarly, examinations earlier scheduled for March 21(Saturday), 2026, have been rescheduled to March 25((Wednesday), 2026. And the Examination for subject “Home Science” only on Day-16, March 13(Friday), 2026 has been sifted to March 28(Saturday), 2026.
Education officials believe the introduction of the improvement examination system will significantly benefit students by giving them a second chance to achieve better results. The move is expected to strengthen academic performance among Plus II students and help them compete more effectively for higher education opportunities at national-level institutions.
