New Delhi, August 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of eminent educationist, philanthropist, and former Governor Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D. Y.) Patil. In a condolence message shared on X, the Prime Minister said that Dr. Patil dedicated his life to serving society through education and philanthropy and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the poor and underprivileged.
The Prime Minister said that Dr. Patil was at the forefront of expanding educational opportunities and making quality education accessible to thousands of students across the country. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and admirers, praying for peace to the departed soul.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences and wished strength and courage to Dr. Patil's family during this difficult time.
Dr. D. Y. Patil was one of India's most respected educationists and social reformers. He founded the renowned D. Y. Patil Group of Institutions, which includes more than 150 educational institutions and several universities offering higher education in medicine, engineering, dentistry, management, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, and other professional fields. His institutions have educated lakhs of students from India and abroad.
Apart from education, Dr. Patil made significant contributions to healthcare by establishing medical colleges, teaching hospitals, and affordable healthcare facilities. His vision helped improve access to quality medical education and healthcare services.
Dr. Patil also made a lasting contribution to Indian sports by developing the internationally recognised DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, which has hosted major cricket and football events.
In public life, he served as the Governor of Tripura (2009–2013), Bihar (2012–2014), and also held the additional charge of West Bengal (2013–2014). Earlier, he was associated with the Indian National Congress and served as a legislator in Maharashtra.
In recognition of his remarkable contribution to education and social service, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1991.
Dr. D. Y. Patil's lifelong commitment to education, healthcare, philanthropy, and nation-building has left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
