Pune, 1st August, 2026: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah presented the Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026 to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at a ceremony held in Pune, Maharashtra. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol, and several other dignitaries attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah paid tribute to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his 106th death anniversary and described him as a great freedom fighter, teacher, journalist and thinker who inspired the nation with the slogan, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it." He said Tilak awakened national consciousness and laid the foundation of cultural nationalism, which continues to inspire the country today.
Shah urged the youth to study Tilak's life, speeches and writings to understand the values of patriotism, self-reliance, discipline and national service. He also highlighted Tilak's contributions to education through institutions such as the New English School, Deccan Education Society and Fergusson College.
Congratulating Ajit Doval, the Home Minister said the Lokmanya Tilak National Award recognises individuals whose exceptional service inspires society. He described Doval as the longest-serving National Security Advisor and praised his decades of dedicated service to India's security.
Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ajit Doval has played a key role in strengthening India's national security framework, modernising the armed forces and enhancing the country's internal and external security. He noted that Doval was instrumental in laying the foundation of the Multi Agency Centre (MAC), which has become a crucial pillar of India's internal security system.
The Home Minister also highlighted Doval's distinguished career in the Intelligence Bureau, where he handled several major national security challenges, including assignments in the Northeast, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Pakistan. He said Doval's experience and strategic leadership have significantly contributed to India's stronger security and foreign policy over the past decade.
Earlier in the day, Amit Shah also paid floral tributes to the statue of Annabhau Sathe on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
