Manipur, 14th Sep, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Manipur’s Churachandpur district, marking his first trip to the state since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The unrest between the valley-majority Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki tribes has so far left more than 260 people dead and displaced nearly 50,000.

In Churachandpur, Modi met families who lost their homes in the clashes and interacted with displaced children, accepting a bouquet and a painting. He also wore a traditional feathered hat gifted by a child. Addressing thousands gathered at Peace Ground, he appealed to all groups to give up violence and “strengthen the bridge of brotherhood between the hills and the valley.” He announced government support for constructing 7,000 new homes for affected families.

Despite poor weather, the Prime Minister travelled by road to Churachandpur, telling the crowd: “I salute the spirit of the people of Manipur. The Government of India is with you.” He stressed that peace and stability were essential to restore normal life in the state.

This visit came after 864 days, during which critics had accused him of neglecting Manipur. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the visit “shockingly insensitive” for being less than five hours long, while Priyanka Gandhi said Modi should have come much earlier when lives could still have been saved.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated development projects in Mizoram and Manipur before heading to Assam to attend a centenary event honouring Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.
