Chandbali, 29th April, 2026: A shocking incident has emerged from Bhadrak district where a man allegedly lost his life after being brutally assaulted and set on fire at his in-laws’ house, reportedly linked to his wife’s illicit relationship.
Tension gripped the area as family members staged a road blockade at Digachhia Bazar on the Chandbali–Bhadrak National Highway, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The protest led to heavy traffic congestion, with hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
The deceased, Santosh Das of Kherang Panchayat, had married Vandana Das of Jaleswarpur Panchayat around 10 years ago in a love marriage. The couple has two children. Santosh worked outside the state as a migrant labourer.
According to sources, during Santosh’s absence, his wife allegedly developed an illicit relationship with the neighbour named Mrutyunjay. When Santosh learned about the relationship, disputes arose between the couple.
A few days ago, Vandana reportedly went missing. Santosh filed a complaint at Chandbali police station. During the investigation, police traced her and brought her back from the custody of the alleged accused, Mrutyunjay.
On the day of the incident, Santosh went to his in-laws’ house, where a heated argument broke out. Family members allege that Santosh was severely beaten by his wife, mother-in-law, Mrutyunjay, and two others. They then allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire.
Santosh was rescued in critical condition and first taken to Bhadrak hospital, later shifted to Cuttack for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries.
After his body was brought back to the village, family members blocked the main road near Digachhia Bazar, refusing to perform the last rites until all accused were arrested.
Later, SDPO Chandbali, Prabhash Sahoo, visited the spot and assured the family of swift action. Following his assurance, the family agreed to cremate the body but continues to demand strict punishment for all those involved.
The incident has sparked outrage in the locality, raising concerns over rising domestic disputes and violence linked to extramarital affairs. Locals are calling for stricter law enforcement and social awareness to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
