The state of education in India has once again come under the spotlight after a shocking incident in Himachal Pradesh. A government school principal in Ronhat, Sirmaur, issued a cheque for ₹7,616. While the numbers were written correctly, the words left everyone surprised. Instead of the proper spelling, the cheque read: “Saven Thursday Six Harendra Sixty Rupees Only.”The cheque naturally bounced, but it left behind a bigger question—what is happening in our education system?

The photo of the cheque, now viral on social media, has become a symbol of poor teaching standards. Critics say that while the state spends lakhs of rupees sending teachers abroad for training, the reality back home tells a different story. A single cheque has “laughed” at the very foundation of the education system.

This is not the only such case. In Balrampur, Chhattisgarh, another government school teacher was caught on video spelling basic English numbers like “eleven” and “nineteen” incorrectly. Despite drawing a salary of ₹70,000 per month, he confidently wrote wrong spellings like “aivene” and “ninithin” on the blackboard, even teaching them to students. The video sparked anger among parents and raised doubts about the quality of teachers in government schools.

Meanwhile, on the global front, Indian universities have been trying to improve their standing. The latest QS World Rankings placed IIT Delhi at 123rd, IIT Bombay at 129th, and IIT Madras at 180th. India now has 54 institutions ranked, with five of them in the top 100 for Employer Reputation. This shows some progress, but the ground reality in schools still tells another story.

Education is called the “wheel” of a nation. Without it, a country cannot move forward. The cheque from Himachal Pradesh and the viral video from Chhattisgarh are reminders that reforms and policies alone are not enough. The real test lies in classrooms, where children depend on their teachers. Until that improves, the cheque will continue to laugh at the education system.
