Visakhapatnam, 11th July: The Indian Navy inducted the indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri into its Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the warship reflects India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate and has more than 75% indigenous content. Designed by the Indian Navy and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the warship is equipped with advanced stealth technology, modern sensors, missiles, anti-submarine systems and can carry a multi-role helicopter. It is capable of tackling aerial, surface and underwater threats.

Rajnath Singh said the frigate will strengthen India's maritime security, expand its blue-water operational reach and enhance the Navy's presence in the Indian Ocean Region. He also highlighted the Navy's role as a First Responder and a preferred security partner in the Indo-Pacific. The government, he added, will continue investing in next-generation defence technologies while strengthening conventional military capabilities.
