New Delhi / Tezpur, 9 June 2026: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, facilitated the first export of GI-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai on 7 June 2026.
The shipment weighed 1 metric tonne and marks an important step in taking agricultural products from the North Eastern Region to international markets.
Tezpur litchi is known for its sweet taste, bright red colour, strong aroma and good eating quality. Popular varieties grown in the region include Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi.
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag has helped strengthen the product’s identity and recognition in the market. Officials said this has increased interest among overseas buyers and opened new opportunities for premium exports from Assam.
The consignment was flagged off in the presence of local and state officials, APEDA representatives, exporters and farmers in Tezpur, Sonitpur district.
A major benefit of the initiative was better returns for growers. Farmers linked to the export supply chain received about 10% higher prices than the prevailing domestic market rates, despite strong local demand. The export is expected to create more marketing opportunities and encourage farmers to join export-oriented value chains.
APEDA said it has been supporting agricultural exports from the North East through quality certification, infrastructure support, training programmes, export-oriented production practices and market linkages with farmers, FPOs and exporters.
The successful shipment to Dubai is expected to help increase future exports and strengthen the global presence of Assam’s GI-tagged products.
The shipment was flagged off in Tezpur in the presence of local MLA Prithiraj Rava, Assam Agriculture Production Commissioner Aruna Rajoria, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Sonitpur District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, and representatives of M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd. Farmers, exporters, and government officials also attended the event.
